O Skinner είχε κάνει σπουδαίες δουλειές στο σινεμά.

Δυστυχώς όμως δεν έγινε περισσότερο γνωστός από τους αναγνωρισμένους συνθέτες, όπως οι Alfred Newman, Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman, Miklós Rózsa κ.α.

Γεννήθηκε στο Σικάγο το 1898 και πέθανε στο Λος Άντζελες το 1973. Το 1935 βρέθηκε στο Hollywood και υπέγραψε συμβόλαιο με την «Universa», γράφοντας μουσική για τον κινηματογράφο. Ήταν υποψήφιος τέσσερις φορές για Oscar.

Τη δεκαετία του '40 εργάστηκε κυρίως στην Ευρώπη, κι έγραψε μουσική σε ταινίες του Mario Bava, Max Ophüls, Alfred Hitchcock κ.α. Κορυφαία του συνεργασία ήταν με τον Douglas Sirk και τα περίφημα μελοδράματά του.
